Founder and event organizer Kelly McWilliams describes it this way: “WeWed gatherings are for those who want to continue to build their business and/or become a better business person. It’s about getting motivated, learning how to improve, discussing what our industry is, where its going, and how to stay on top (or get back up there).”

When Kelly offered the first WeWed Brunch at the award-winning Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club I knew I must attend! It was such a fun and educational experience that I cleared my calendar to attend the second event at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club. This year, I was honored to be asked to speak at WeWed Summer 2010 which was hosted by the new and uniquely luxurious Resort at Marina Village. Not to mention that I was in the incredible company of Saundra Hadley, Jeannine Kennedy and Kelly McWilliams (of course).

My presentation centered on Time Management techniques and strategies. I basically discussed that there are many options available to us, but the important thing is to find the system or method “that works best for you”. Sometimes a combination of techniques works the best. It’s all about trying new things and taking the time to evaluate what’s working and what’s not.

I was thrilled that I also got to enjoy the other speaker’s presentations, and I met so many wonderful people. I returned to Orlando feeling very motivated!

Welcome to 2010! A whole year has elapsed since I last blogged about the importance of keeping your website content fresh and relevant. My previous post – Website Tune-Up – focused on strategies to keep your website current and favorable to the search engines. Today, I hope to share some equally important tips to optimize your website and online presence this year.

1. Make the most of social media. Over the last twelve months I’ve enjoyed a significant increase in traffic to my website and blog as a result of social media. Active participation in Facebook and Twitter has reinforced our web presence and generated many new leads and relationships. If you have social media profiles, be sure to link those profiles to your website.

2. Blog! Blogging offers great benefits due to easy to index regular content. Add a few basic SEO skills and you’re ready to go! Take your blog a step further: Host your blog on your own website instead of using a free hosted blog. Why? When you host your own blog your blog posts supplement the content of your website, thus increasing the quality and vibrancy of your site. Adding an RSS feed button to both your website and blog will make it easy for readers to subscribe to your feed and keep up with your posts. Additionally, RSS features can help make your online (internet) marketing strategies more effective.

3. Don’t be anonymous. One of the primary goals of your website is to build trust and credibility. Does your website give potential customers the information they need? Is your name, photo and contact information prominently displayed? If you are a service provider you should make every effort to make a personal connection with your visitors.

4. Never underestimate the power of a well designed website. If your website is more than two years old, a revamp alone could boost your SEO ranking. HTML and CSS are the most common technologies used in making web pages, but there are also other ways to go. Flash is known for it’s excellent multimedia capabilities but is generally believed to be less search engine friendly than CSS. Some businesses have even abandoned traditional websites in favor of blog-based sites.

5. Use high quality images. Website images should be carefully selected; ideally they should represent your own work and style to help you connect with your audience (target market). Some vendors may use stock photography as part of their start-up promotions, but in the wedding and event industry I’d advise moving away from this option as quickly as possible (or risk possible damage to your reputation). By the same token, amateur photos will not adequately show even your best work – so select images with a discerning eye.

5.5 Upgrade to Video! If a picture is worth a thousand words than video is worth a million. Video is fast-rising as the newest ‘must-have’ feature because it helps build brand, it’s more engaging than static, printed text, and it’s easier to effectively demonstrate your product or service.

There is virtually no cost associated with these tips – especially if you have the ability or capability to edit your own website. Many resources and tutorials are available online if you need additional information. Otherwise, consider hiring someone to assist with migrating your blog or updating the look of your website – it will be money well spent.

Each month, I have the privilege and the pleasure of working with Kerline Docteur PBC to coordinate networking luncheons for Central Florida members of the Association of Bridal Consultants. The purpose of the luncheons is tri-fold:

First, monthly meetings bring ABC members and potential members (guests) together to build relationships. Vendor relationships are essential to delivering the best products and services to our clients and facilitiating ”team dynamics”.

Second, the meetings provide a forum to educate our members. We bring in speakers and create special programs to keep our members on the cutting edge of wedding and event design, as well as business and marketing trends.

Third, it’s important to build the presence of ABC within our community. ABC is an international association with a history that spans over 26 years. With over 4,000 members located in all 50 states and in 27 countries, ABC’s goals have always been to raise professional standards in the wedding industry and to make brides happy. By developing an active Local Networking Group (LNG) we bring attention to the benefits of ABC membership and showcase the professionalism of our members.

This year (2009) shines brilliantly as one of our finest and most rewarding to date! We have planned and coordinated nine luncheon events at venues throughout Central Florida. In June, we held our third annual “Showers of Happiness” event to benefit Habitat for Humanity.

(c) Elegant Imagery

In July, we hosted a spectacular educational event entitled “Indian Weddings 101: Defining the Indian Wedding Experience“. For this particular event, we had engaged local Indian Wedding experts to explain the elements and cultural traditions of Hindu, Sikh and Muslim weddings. (Click on these images to see more fabulous pictures of this event, posted on the ABC Florida website.)

Shown left: Akshar Patel, Kerline Docteur, Elisa Delgardio and Remmal Karamsadkar

As in years past, October marked the end of our meeting calendar and we were determined to create a memorable event! We tapped some of our best resources (members!) to provide catering, decor, entertainment and ‘enhancements’ for our event. We also had the generous support of a few friends (future members…?) and when all the elements came together the outcome was sensational!

Heather Canada, ABC of First Coast Weddings presented a very insightful educational session entitled Business Administration for Creative Types in which she shared some excellent time management and organizational techniques. After Heather’s presentation, attendees enjoyed a delicious three course luncheon prepared by the catering team at the Rosen Centre Hotel. Then we revealed a special treat: a live performance arranged by ABC member Lisa Kovach (Key Artist Group)!

We are so grateful to the long list of fabulous professionals who made our closing meeting of 2009 such an incredible success! Kudos to: Michelle Williams – Rosen Centre Hotel, Cheryl Andrews – Cheryl’s Distinctive Creations, Lisa Kovach – Key Artist Group, Rose Robinson – Invitation Lounge, Nermala – Unique Linens, Quest Drape, Allan Jay Images, Bruce – Treasured Moments Videography, M.J. Farb – Junction 88, Pure Magic Ice Cream, and Heather Canada of First Coast Weddings.

We are happy to share this video link with you; it will take a few minutes to load since the video is approximately 8 minutes long, but I’m sure you will enjoy it!

Our “Re-Introduce Yourself” meeting was held at the Hyatt Regency and boasted an attendance of over 100 ISES members and guests. Everyone was buzzing about Laura Schwartz of White House Strategies and looking forward to hearing her speak; she had tailored a presentation specifically for our group about the power of networking and how to network more effectively.

Laura has a dynamic personality and her boundless enthusiasm is contagious! She did an outstanding job of communicating great concepts and techniques for “building bridges” and optimizing your networking resources. Her presentation sparked many ideas for me, and I plan to implement some of her suggestions in the coming months.

One thing she said really stuck with me. She said, “Be the B“… At first my eyebrows raised (yes, she had my attention with that one!) and then she explained that it’s great to be in the position to connect an “A” and a “C” – in other words, be the person who connects others. Being the “B” essentially makes you the bridge, and helping others is a way of leading by example. This resonated with me because I often find myself in this exact position and it was nice to be reminded that even when you’re not directly benefiting from a situation, your role is important – sometimes key!

We arrived at the most impressive(!) Miromar Lakes Beach Club at 9 am and were very excited by the great turnout. For Kerline and me this was a fabulous opportunity to exchange ideas with a whole new group of wedding professionals, and personally meet Kelly McWilliams (Weddings By Socialites), a well respected colleague. Kelly’s knowledge of social media marketing and networking was truly impressive; not only did she share her own remarkable stories and experiences about with us, she did an outstanding job of coaching us to better utilize blogging and micro blogging services to enhance our professional network.

I’m so glad I made the trip because it was an absolutely wonderful day! I’m looking forward to connecting with Kelly and all my new SWFL friends at the cutting edge of SMM!

Excuse me, but I am taking a few minutes to pat myself on the back: I just completed my first website tune-up of 2009!

I won’t go into any long winded explanations or step-by-step instructions, but I can certainly recommend some key points to freshen things up for the new year! (Some of these tips may not work well for flash websites.)

5.5 FREE TIPS:

1. Check the expiration of your domain name. Tell the search engines you plan to be in business for a long time by pushing your domain renewal back for at least three to five years.

2. Update the dates and links referenced on your site. If your website footer reads “Copyright 2006″ it need to be updated immediately. Ideally you should list a span, such as: Copyright © 2001 – 2009. Also, delete references to past events that might date your site (with obvious exception to your history of work or resume of experience). Test all the internal links on your site to ensure that navigation is fully functional. Delete any outbound links that are ‘dead’.

3. Have you checked your stats lately? There’s a multitude of ways you can do this. One way is through Google’s product “Analytics“. Analytics is free and I was able to get it up and running myself. If you have some general knowledge of reading html code, and you have access to edit your site, you can probably do this yourself too, and it will cost you nothing. Otherwise, you can ask your webmaster to implement this technology on your behalf. A second option would be through your web host. Some hosting services offer tracking as part of the hosting package, or as an add on service. Statistical information regarding your website traffic is usually easy to decipher from these types of sources. There’s nothing for you to set up, per say, you just log in and review the info.

Checking your stats will give you key information about the most visited pages on your site, how long visitors spend reading or reviewing the info, how many visitors by day, week, month, etc.

4. Take a look at your page titles; that’s the information that pops up at the very top of the browser and provides the primary description for your product or service. You may want to lengthen them or shorten them. First things first: Each page on your website should have a unique title or at least be customized to reflect the content of the page. If the title bar on every page of your site reads the same, you should make the appropriate revisions to differentiate them, thereby increasing the relevance of your keywords, content and search results.

5. Purchase multiple versions of your company name. Why? For starters, this will prevent the brand confusion that results when a start up company selects the same or similar name to yours. Also, it helps customers find you even if they spell your company name incorrectly or can’t recall the exact web address (this happens ALL the time!). Think about the way you use the web and how you search for others, then reverse the process to create additional avenues for customers to find you. Then, be sure to “point” all the secondary domains to your website.

5.5 BACK UP YOUR SITE !! If you can’t do it yourself, ask your webmaster to do it for you.

One final recommendation: Don’t’ forget to run a Copyscape scan to document and protect the integrity of your content. If you are the true and original author of the content, you will surely want to know if someone has plagiarized your work. Also, plagiarizers beware: website content can be authenticated all the way back to the launch date of a site.

I welcome any comments you may have. And please feel free to share your favorite, fast & easy tune-up tips as well!

“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.”

- Kahlil Gibran

The universe is talking to me. The message is loud and clear, and it’s coming at me from all directions! It’s in the books I’m reading, the emails I’m receiving, the shows I’m watching… it says “Change your attitude!”. Well, ok then. It doesn’t cost anything and it sure would be nice to have a brand new, upgraded attitude.

I’ve come to realize that a positive attitude is one of the most powerful attributes a person can possess. The ability to be positive – at home or at work, in thoughts and in actions – is related to all the good things we seek in life, such as health, happiness, love and success. For some this comes easily, for others it requires more effort. (As you may have guessed, I fall into the latter category.)

This year, I am setting some different goals for myself. Instead of resolving to exercise more, eat less and keep my desk clutter free, I will focus my energy on being positive. I want to smile more and complain less, I want to nurture my inner spirit by connecting with more positive people and making better choices, and I’d like to encourage others to do the same.

No; strike that.

I will smile more and complain less, I will nurture my inner spirit by connecting with more positive people and making better choices, and I will do my best to lead others by example.

I was in good company because other members of the panel included ISES Orlando Chapter President Christine Logan (T. Skorman Productions) and fellow ISES Board member Byron Loper (Ice Magic). Laura Ball (Orlando Marriott Downtown) was on hand to represent NACE and I was delighted to represent ABC and ISES. Dr. Mary Jo Ross, CSEP CPCE had invited us to speak to the students about our multifaceted careers in the special event industry (which I always enjoy!). Also worth mentioning is the fact that rising stars Laura Ball and Byron Loper are RCHM Alumni and former students of Dr. Ross.

It was very exciting to be able to share valuable information (pointers) with the students regarding networking with other industry professionals, as well as tips for getting noticed by prospective employers, gaining experience and building their resumes. They are so lucky to have these types of educational opportunities!

There has always been a list…

When I was younger, it was in the form of a large grid that existed on the side of the fridge. It divided the household chores and displayed the daily responsibilities of each family member: feed the dog, clean the bathroom, fold the laundry, practice piano, etc. It mapped out 7 days x 7 people – this was an organizational feat and weekly project for my mother. To say it was helpful would be an understatement; we would’ve been lost without it.

I started honing my list making skills in my late twenties. Back then they were mostly used to help me focus on goals and project related to-do’s. In my thirties, list making became more a part of my daily routine… I was a mommy, a homeowner and entrepreneur, so there was quite a bit to keep track of… much more than could be easily organized into the little boxes on the wall calendar. So about 10 years ago, I began logging my lists into spiral bound notebooks.

Eventually I purchased a PDA to help manage my daily activities and synchronize appointments, but I still rely on my notebook with it’s handwritten to-do lists, reminders and goals to chart my course and track my progress.

These days lists rule my world and my notebook is indispensable. At times I’m unsure whether this is more reflective of my age or the age we live in. It seems that we are busier than ever (”crazy busy” – to coin a phrase), sometimes overwhelmed and often distracted. I often say “I need a score card to keep up”! I remember a recent situation where I became quite upset with myself because I forgot something really important when I went out of town for a business conference. I started to wonder if I was was losing my edge, and why my list had failed me! However, the reality of the situation was that there were just too many stressors: hurricane rains, school closings, salon appointments, packing and various other preparations which contributed to short circuiting my careful planning. Sometimes stuff just happens… we live and learn, and do our best to keep up.

The other day I was straightening the den and came across a list my daughter had typed and printed. “Aww! What’s this?” I said, feeling so proud – apparently she does take after me! Then I read it… it said (word for word):

1. play a couple of games
2. make brownies
3. watch movie (half)
4. stop movie eat brownies
5. finish movie
6. chillax
7. start getting ready for bed

Underneath the list was a big happy face.

I didn’t have to look in my notebook to know that there wasn’t a happy face at the bottom of any one of my lists… So, I am going to tape my daughter’s list to the fridge as a reminder to make time for some fun stuff. Yep – kids sure can teach us a lot about life.
